Tailor your CV to one job without inventing experience

Choose a real requirement from the vacancy, connect it to something you actually did, and write a clear sentence about your contribution. Keep anything you cannot substantiate out of the CV.

A practical JobAtOnce worksheet · Source checked 5 October 2026 · The example below is fictional, not a customer result or expert endorsement.

Start with the vacancy and your evidence

  1. Check the original vacancy. Save the employer’s link, role title and the date you checked it. Follow the stated application instructions. An old search result does not establish that a vacancy is still open.
  2. Pick the requirements that matter. Separate essential requirements from preferences. If a requirement is unclear, record the question rather than guessing.
  3. Match each requirement to your own experience. Note the role or project, what you did, the source you can check and any uncertainty. Keep employer names, job titles and dates accurate.
  4. Write and review the sentence. Describe your action and context. Include a numerical result only if you can support it. Retain enough career history for the reader to understand where the experience came from.

A worked example: from a vague bullet to a supported claim

This fictional candidate helped with a student event. The fictional vacancy asks for coordination experience. The candidate has no evidence of budget ownership or a measured efficiency improvement.

Fictional example — use your own facts
StageWhat to write down
Vague starting pointHelped organise an event.
Available evidenceA shared rota and event notes show that the candidate arranged volunteer shifts and sent schedule updates.
Supported wordingCoordinated volunteer shifts for a student event and shared schedule changes with the team.
Leave outManaged the event budget or improved efficiency by 30%: neither claim is supported by the example.

This rewrite makes the contribution clearer; it is not evidence that the candidate will pass an applicant tracking system or get an interview.

Three terms used in the worksheet

Requirement
A skill, qualification or task the employer names in the vacancy. Mark whether it is essential, preferred or unclear.
Evidence
A fact about your own work, study or project that you can explain and check. Private notes can help you verify it; do not send confidential employer documents with an application.
Transferable skill
A skill used in one setting that may be relevant in another. Name the original context so the reader can assess the connection.

Use the free evidence worksheet

For each requirement, fill in: your example, what you personally did, the source or note, missing facts, proposed wording and a final accuracy check. A blank entry is better than an invented claim.

Download the CV evidence worksheet (.txt)

Open it in a text editor or print it. No signup is required. Keep the completed copy private; the blank download does not collect your answers.

Build and check the document

Open the free CV workspace, import an existing CV or start with the questions, then check your facts and edit the basic document. Your workspace is saved in this browser; export a backup before clearing browser data or changing devices. AI tailoring and company research are outside the free plan.

Before sending the file, use the final CV review checklist. For download instructions and limits, see the free CV builder.

Common questions

What if I have no paid work experience?

Use relevant study, volunteering or personal projects when they are real. Label the context accurately; a class project is not employment. Explain what you personally did and leave unsupported requirements as gaps.

Should I copy every keyword from the vacancy?

Use the employer’s terminology only when it accurately describes your experience. Explain it with a concrete example. Do not add a tool, qualification or responsibility you have not actually used or held.

Is AI tailoring part of the free workspace?

No. The free workspace is for building and editing a basic CV. AI tailoring and company research are excluded, and paid plans are not available yet. You can use this worksheet to tailor wording yourself.

Will a tailored CV guarantee an interview?

No. This method helps you present relevant evidence clearly. It does not guarantee screening results, interviews or employment. Follow the employer’s current application instructions.
